Israel and Hamas have not yet reached an agreement on a temporary ceasefire, a White House spokesman said on Saturday evening.
The US continues to work toward an agreement between the two sides, the spokesperson said. A second US official confirmed that no agreement had been reached.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday evening that Israel and Hamas had reached a Qatar-brokered five-day ceasefire in exchange for fifty or more hostages.
White House National Security Council spokeswoman Adrienne Watson said in a statement: “There is no agreement yet, but we continue to work hard to get there.”
Israel vowed to destroy Hamas after the militant group’s attack on Israel on October 7, in which its fighters killed 1,200 people and took 240 hostages, according to Israeli data.
The conflict has entered its seventh week, officials in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip say. They have raised the death toll to 12,300, including 5,000 children.
Israel declared its readiness to expand its offensive against Hamas militants in the southern Gaza Strip after airstrikes killed dozens of Palestinians, including civilians who reportedly took refuge in two schools. (rts)
