An employee said a small train was on fire on platform eight. Emergency services asked people to leave the rear of the station. A fire service spokeswoman told WalesOnline at 5.28pm the fire had been extinguished and crews had left the scene.

The 3.50pm service from Pontypridd to Barry Island was canceled in Cardiff city center due to reports of a small burning object under one of the carriages. The fire was extinguished by platform workers using a manual extinguisher and firefighters responded as a precaution. Passengers were removed from the train and transferred to another carriage. Platforms 6 and 7 were temporarily closed but later reopened. Platform 8 remains closed while the train is assessed. Cardiff Central station has remained open throughout, with only minor disruptions to a small number of services, but passengers are advised to check for up-to-date travel information.

“The wreckage under the train caught fire”
We know the fire started when the wreckage under the Pontypridd Island Barry train caught fire as the train braked. It was a very small fire that was put out by staff without causing any damage to the train. Platforms six, seven and eight are closed, but platforms six and seven reopened within 15 minutes, while platform eight remains closed ahead of the assessment, which is scheduled to take place at 6pm. Platform eight services have been moved to other platforms and most trains are running normally.

“Feeling Confused”
Our reporter at the station, Bethany Gavaghan, can’t see platform eight, where the train reportedly caught fire. People were evacuated through the rear of the station and the rear entrance was closed, although people were still able to enter through the main entrance. Bethany said at 4:32 p.m. there was a fire truck and a police officer in the parking lot behind the police station. Trains on other platforms appear to continue running. “There is confusion,” said our correspondent. “Everyone says, ‘What’s going on?’
