Ukrainian Invictus Games contestants take center stage next week

Nineteen Ukrainians were given permission by President Zelensky to leave their country specifically for the Invictus Games. This allows the Ukrainian veteran team to be present this week at the international sporting event in The Hague for soldiers who have been physically or psychologically injured during military service.

But Pavlo Kovalskyi of the Ukrainian team says they too will have to return to their troops once the Invictus Games end at the end of this week. “Then we will again participate in the defense of our country.”

Serhi Kalytjoek, who is also part of the team, says he is not very happy to be here. “Because we are not here with the whole team now.” The war with Russia has already killed one member of the team. Another member of the team was taken prisoner of war. Not everyone managed to come to the Netherlands.
