At least 37 people were killed in a clash that broke out at the Michel d’Ornano Stadium in Brazzaville, the capital of the Republic of Congo, during the military recruitment campaign on Monday evening. State officials confirmed this yesterday.
“The provisional death toll determined by emergency services is 37 dead and many injured,” reads a memo from the Congolese government. “A crisis unit has been established under the authority of the Prime Minister,” he explains, without giving further details about the reasons for the tragedy.
Congolese authorities have planned the recruitment of 1,500 young people into the Congolese armed forces this year, and centers have opened in various cities across the country where registration is possible. After staying in the queue for days, many young people tried to come before the registrations closed, which would start the massacre.
In the Republic of Congo, where unemployment is very high, the army is one of the few organizations that provide employment.
