A vehicle exploded on the Rainbow Bridge connecting the USA and Canada in Niagara Falls. According to the first statement made by CNN, the car, which came from the Canadian side of the US border shortly before noon, exploded while heading towards the secondary control area after accelerating during the control process at the checkpoint. Police are still investigating the dynamics of the crash: It is unclear whether the explosion was caused by impact or explosives. The only thing that is certain at the moment is that the two passengers in the vehicle lost their lives.
The FBI is also investigating the incident. According to the American broadcaster Fox News (citing its sources), it was a terrorist attack: explosives were found inside the car. All buildings in the area were immediately evacuated.
Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau said that “the situation is very serious and it is too early to get an answer.” “It is too early to tell whether the accident at the Rainbow Bridge on the US-Canada border was an intentional act,” Canadian public safety minister Dominic LeBlanc said at a news conference. Meanwhile, the White House has been alerted to the incident and both Canada and the United States are increasing their homeland security levels.
