Only one open border crossing will remain on Finland’s border with Russia: Raja-Jooseppi in Lapland, Helsinki government leader Petteri Orpo announced.
– The government decided today to close more border crossings, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said during a press conference on Wednesday.
Finland closes further border crossings with Russia
As he explained, the rest of the currently active intersections with Russia will be closed on Friday night to Saturday night. This decision, taken by the Finnish authorities, stems from the fact that Russian services direct migrants from Africa and Asia to Finland. The Finnish side indicates that Russia not only does not try to stop the migrants, but also helps them move towards Finland.
Finland will therefore close all border crossings with Russia from Friday, except Raja-Jooseppi, to stop the flow of asylum seekers into this country, Orpo explained, quoted by Reuters.
Raja-Jooseppi is a small and northernmost border crossing in the Sami province of Inari. From here it is about 250 km to Murmansk.
Russia “does not accept such accusations”
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia “does not accept such accusations.” According to him, “border crossings are used by those who have the right to do so and in this regard our border guards fully comply with all official orders.”
Until the fall of 2023, the Russian Border Guard did not allow people who did not have the documents that gave them the right to enter the country to approach the Finnish border. The situation changed in October, when the entry of people without visas was stopped.
