Meters-long “flight” and fire: Video of a car exploding between the USA and Canada

A car rushing towards a checkpoint at full speed, crashing into something, “flying” a few meters and then bursting into flames as it hits the ground. This is what happened on Wednesday evening on the Rainbow Bridge connecting the USA and Canada. The driver and passenger lost their lives, and a police officer was injured. It was immediately thought to be an act of terrorism, triggering the closure of four border crossings between the US and Canada and Buffalo International Airport in New York. Hours later, the FBI denied this hypothesis, but it is still unclear what happened. Here’s what we know so far.

The incident was captured on security camera and the video was published on X by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agency. In the clip, the car is seen traveling at high speed on the US side, before hitting an object and “flying” through the air before hitting the ground and exploding.

“There is currently no indication of a terrorist attack or threat to the public,” New York Governor Kathy Hochultold told reporters Wednesday evening. Shortly thereafter, the FBI released a memo closing the investigation. “A search of the scene did not reveal any explosive material and no connection to terrorism was identified,” a post on X reads.

Authorities were unable to identify the two people killed. CNN reported that the driver was a 56-year-old man and was traveling in a Bentley with his wife to attend a concert. It remains unclear what happened: whether it was a voluntary act or an accident.

An eyewitness told Buffalo TV station: WGRZ-TV He said he was near the bridge with his wife when the car, traveling at high speed on the US side, crashed into a fence at the intersection and was thrown into the air before exploding.
