Ten years after the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, ​​former South African Paralympic champion Oscar Pistorius has been released on parole. “The Department of Correctional Services confirms the conditional release of Mr Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, effective January 5, 2024,” the prison administration said in a statement, following deliberations by an ad hoc committee at a prison near Pretoria where The 37-year-old is in custody of a former athlete who in 2017 was sentenced by the Johannesburg High Court of Appeal to thirteen years and six months in prison for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, ​​which occurred in 2013.

The prison doors will soon open for Pistorius. In 2013, the athlete killed his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, ​​shooting her several times through the bathroom door of his home on Valentine’s Day: he said he mistook her for a thief. Not against the release, Steenkamp’s mother did not, however, hide her doubts in a letter sent to the commission itself, questioning whether Pistorius’s “huge anger problems” were really resolved in prison. She also said she felt “concerned about the safety of any woman” who came into contact with him.
