Iceland lifts state of emergency due to seismic activity; does not rule out a volcanic eruption

Icelandic authorities decided on Thursday to lift the state of emergency declared on the 11th of Grindavík (southwest) due to seismic activity, given the likelihood of skin irritation within the city limits.

Today the alert level was lowered to ‘Dangerous’, meaning the number of hours during which residents can come and collect their belongings was extended, according to the quota in this community of about 4,000 residents, which has been evacuated for almost two weeks. .

The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) still considers it possible that a volcanic eruption could occur, especially in the area between Hagafell and Pele de Sylingar, a few kilometers northeast of Grindavík.

Seismic activity has decreased in recent days while ground investigations are being carried out in Svartsengi, recalled this organization, which a few days ago reported the discovery of magma in the so-called volcanic dam, which is about 15 kilometers long and was formed by intrusions. of volcanic material. in a liquid state that solidifies in a slow process.

The chance of a volcanic eruption somewhere along the magma intrusion remains. It is possible that magma forms in the area between Hagafell and Sýlingarfell. However, as the Earth’s crust continues to expand and seismicity decreases and magma flows into the intrusion, the likelihood of an impending eruption decreases over time.

Icelandic authorities announced last week that they would build 6 to 8 meter high lava protection dams on November 30 around the nearby Svartsengi power station and the Blue Lagoon, the region’s famous geothermal spa.

Iceland is a volcanic island in the North Atlantic Ocean with approximately 370,000 inhabitants and an area of over 100,000 square kilometers.
