37-year-old Oscar Pistorius was granted parole. The former South African Paralympic champion, convicted of murdering his girlfriend, will be released from prison on January 5 after a 10-year sentence. “The Department of Prison Services (DCS) has approved the parole of Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, effective January 5, 2024,” a DCS spokesperson said. The world’s fastest man on two steel limbs will be given probation until he serves his sentence.
Steenkamp family spokesman Rob Matthews said in a statement to the press that Pistorius would be required to “undergo anger management therapy, violence against women therapy and community service” as a condition of his parole eligibility.
Reeva Steenkamp died at dawn on Valentine’s Day 2013. Oscar Pistorius killed her by shooting her four times through the bathroom door of his villa in Pretoria, South Africa. The athlete has always denied killing his girlfriend in a rage, instead claiming he mistook her for a thief. According to the prosecution, Pistorius fired after arguing with his partner, and therefore the murder was stated to be intentional. The former Paralympic athlete has been in prison since 2014 following a 13-year prison sentence.
Oscar Pistorius “could not rehabilitate himself”. This was said by Reeva’s mother, June Steenkamp, who was interviewed by the parole board before the decision. “Rehabilitation requires the person to deal honestly with the crime he committed and its consequences. No one who cannot fully face the truth can claim to feel remorse.”
