The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the impact of unilateral measures on the enjoyment of human rights described the detention of the Colombian-Venezuelan politician by the United States as a “violation” of Álex Saab’s immunity.
The rapporteurs therefore asked the North American country to ‘end’ the detention of Saab who was held in a prison in that country after being captured in Cape Verde in June 2020.
They also believe that the rights of the politician, who is close to President Nicolás Maduro and is involved in a corruption network within the Venezuelan government, have been violated.
The rapporteurs emphasize in a letter sent to Washington in September but only released a few days ago that Saab suffered legal action by the US when his diplomatic immunity was violated.
The communication states that the United States has failed to comply with the standards of international law.
“Violations of the rights of the people or entities subject to the sanctions have been highlighted, without any determination of their guilt or innocence,” they said.
And they add that, in addition to “failing to meet obligations under international law (…), they are depriving a potentially large number of Venezuelans of their right to an adequate standard of living, including food and health care, by preventing them from official acts to be carried out.” missions to “They will go buy food, medicine and gasoline.”
Last September, the Special Rapporteurs Alena Douhan and Livingstone Sewanyana had already deplored in a statement that “almost two years after his extradition, Álex Saab continues to be detained awaiting trial for alleged conduct that is not considered an international crime and that it therefore, it should not have been the subject of extraterritorial or universal jurisdiction.”
