A US CV-22 Osprey military aircraft crashed near Yakushima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan, with 8 people on board.
The Japanese coast guard told the BBC that some local fishermen rescued one person, but it was unclear what condition that person was in. The remains of the plane have been located. The aircraft was heading from Iwakuni base in Yamaguchi prefecture to Kadena base in Okinawa: it disappeared from radar at 14.40 local time (5.40 this morning in Italy). 6 boats and 2 helicopters responded to the accident scene. A life raft was also spotted.

The Osprey is an aircraft model that has been involved in a number of fatal crashes in recent years. In August, one of these crashed in northern Australia during a military exercise, killing three of the 23 US Marines on board. Six years ago, three sailors died when the Osprey crashed into the back of a transport ship trying to land off the northern coast of Australia.
