The Union of Road Transport Operators of Slovakia (UNAS) has decided to block the Vyšné Nemecké-Uzhhorod border crossing on the border with Ukraine from December 1.
The decision to block the border crossing with Ukraine was taken by the UNAS Presidium after discussions with the Slovak Ministry of Transport. It is noted that carriers will block the border crossing on December 1 from 3 p.m. until further notice.
UNAS clarified in a press release that it would not hinder the transport of fuel, live animals, humanitarian aid, fresh or refrigerated goods or military supplies. In addition, trucks carrying commercial goods will travel at a rate of four trucks per hour.
This month, in solidarity with Polish protesters, UNAS representatives blocked the Vyšné Nemecké border crossing from the Slovak side for an hour. Slovaks are demanding that Brussels restore trade licenses for Ukrainian airlines because European companies cannot compete with them – this is the same demand as that of Polish airlines.
Transport crisis at the border between Poland and Ukraine. What are protesting motorists demanding?
The participants of the protest claim that their main demands are: the restoration of the obligation to have permits for international road freight transport (bilateral and transit) between Poland and Ukraine, which was temporarily abolished under the agreement between the European Union and Ukraine on road transport of goods, and the exemption from the obligation to register in the electronic queuing system for Polish trucks returning from Ukraine without loads, which was introduced by the Ukrainian government.
– We remain in constant contact with the transport sector. We are also talking to the government of Ukraine and the European Commission, because they hold the key to eliminating the direct causes of this protest. Today I am meeting with representatives of the industry, and Deputy Minister Weber will speak, among others: with the Ukrainian side and the European Commission, Infrastructure Minister Alvin Gajadhur said on Wednesday.
