Pope Francis drew attention to the need for a greater presence of women among theologians during today’s meeting with the International Theological Commission at the Vatican.
He emphasized that it is not just about having more women, but about helping with reflection. “Women have a different capacity for theological reflection than we men,” Francis said.
– The Church is a woman – the Holy Father emphasized. – And if we don’t understand who a woman is or what a woman’s theology is, we will never understand what the Church is. One of the great sins we have had is the “masculinization” of the Church, the Holy Father said.
The Pope emphasized that this is not about issues of ministerial service. He was referring to the distinction proposed by the Jesuit theologian Hans Urs von Balthasar, who described the “Peter” or ministerial principle and the “Mary” or mystical principle. “Marriage is more important than Petrinism,” Pope Francis said, because the Church is the bride.
Evangelism theology
The Holy Father emphasized that today we are called to devote ourselves with all the energy of our hearts and minds to the missionary conversion of the Church. It is a response “to Jesus’ call to evangelization, which the Second Vatican Council made its own and which continues to guide our ecclesial journey.”
Francis pointed out the need for a theology of evangelization that promotes dialogue with the cultural world. He added that this must be done in harmony with the people of God, “with a privileged place for the poor and simple people”, but also on their knees, in prayer and adoration before God.
Anniversary of the Council of Nicaea
The Pope then drew attention to the Commission’s work on anthropological and ecological issues. He focused in particular on their “updated and insightful reflection on the continued relevance of the Trinitarian and Christological faith,” which was so strongly emphasized at the Synod of Nicaea, the 1700th anniversary of which we will celebrate during the Jubilee in 2025.
Francis emphasized the spiritual, synodal and ecumenical importance of the Council of Nicaea. He said that theologians are called to spread new and surprising rays of Christ’s eternal light in the house of the Church and in the darkness of the world.
Fun and synodality
The Pope emphasized that synodality is a way of translating into an attitude of communion the Trinitarian dynamic through which God, through Christ and in the breath of the Holy Spirit, comes to humanity. Theologians are responsible for “unleashing the wealth of this beautiful ‘humanizing energy’.”
On the way to celebrating Easter together
Finally, the Holy Father recalled the ecumenical importance of the anniversary of the Council of Nicaea, noting that all the disciples of Jesus are united in professing the Creed proclaimed at this Synod.
He noted that Easter falls on the same day in the calendars of all Christians in 2025, the year of the anniversary of the Council of Nicaea. “How wonderful it would be if this meant a concrete start to always celebrating Easter together!” – admitted the Pope. He encouraged those present to carry this dream in their hearts and invoke the creativity of the Holy Spirit so that the light of the Gospel and community shines brighter.
