There was a risk of an accident at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The blackout was caused by Russian attacks. The fact was reported by “Ukrinform”, specifying that the national electricity company Ukrenergo announced on Facebook that it had recently restored the high voltage line that supplies electricity to the plant. “Currently, the plant has already gone from the reserve scheme to the standard one”, informed Ukrenergo, highlighting that the power supply at night was guaranteed thanks to emergency generators.
A few days ago, the director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, had raised the alarm about the increase in dangers around Ukrainian nuclear power plants due to the proximity of fighting and power cuts. “The dangers are many, they are multiplying and will remain until the end of the conflict”, declared Grossi. The Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, in southern Ukraine, has remained in Russian hands since the invasion of the country in early 2022. «Military actions have increased and in our permanent mission of experts, which we have in Zaporizhzhia and also in other Ukrainian power plants, We see an increase in attacks around” these locations and “this worries us greatly.” The head of the IAEA also mentioned power cuts, “which put the cooling function” of the reactors at risk.
