Gunmen entered a gold mine in northern Peru and detonated explosives after attacking security forces of the Poderosa mining company and taking people hostage. According to a reconstruction by the Andean country’s Interior Ministry, at least nine victims: seven guards who tried to repel the attack and two miners killed when attackers threw explosives into the mine tunnel.

After 10 hours, the police brought the situation under control, arresting seven people suspected of being linked to the illegal mining phenomenon: an unknown number of people managed to escape before the authorities regained control of the situation. Carolina Velasco, governor of the La Libertad region, told La República newspaper that the men were suspected of being contract killers hired to react to authorities’ crackdown on illegal gold mining.
According to the press, authorities are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of this attack, which did not involve any theft. Armed gangs of illegal miniaturists pose a serious problem in the South American country.
