“Did not condemn Hamas”: Israel revoked visa of a senior UN official

A new chapter in the conflict between Israel and the United Nations. Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen confirmed that the visa of United Nations Palestinian Territories coordinator Lynn Hastings, who was accused of not being impartial, was cancelled.

According to the Israeli minister, Hastings would not have condemned Hamas for the “brutal murder of 1,200 Israelis”, “kidnapping of children and elderly people”, “abuse” and “violence” and “use” in Israel on October 7. We will use the people of Gaza as human shields.” Cohen also accused Hastings of “condemning Israel, a democratic country that protects its citizens.” This is where Tel Aviv’s ‘sentence’ comes from: “He cannot serve in the UN and cannot enter Israel.”

This is not the first time Tel Aviv has made harsh accusations against the UN. Some may recall the heated conflict that occurred at the end of October, when United Nations Secretary-General Guterres said Hamas’ attacks were coming “from nowhere” but rather from “56 years of suffocating occupation”, prompting an angry response from Israel.

Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary-general, stated that the cancellation of Hastings’ visa, who is also the deputy special coordinator for the Middle East peace process, actually dates back a few days. However, the official announcement came only with Cohen’s statements. “I can only reiterate the Secretary-General’s full confidence in Hastings in terms of his behavior and the way he works,” Dujarric said.
