Middle East, Israel’s forecast: “How long will the war last”

Intense clashes in the Gaza Strip between Israeli forces and Hamas could continue for another two months. This was reported by Israeli sources cited by the Times of Israel which cites public broadcaster Kan. After this period there will be no ceasefire, sources say, with localized operations carried out by forces that will remain in the vicinity of the Strip. There will be attempts to move forward with new agreements to release more hostages in the next two months, sources say. At some point in the next two months, Israel will allow some Gaza residents to return to their homes, Kan reports, saying this is “a US request and also an operational necessity.”

Meanwhile, as the fighting continues, half of Gaza’s population dies of starvation. This is what the deputy director of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Carl Skau, says, according to the BBC. Skau emphasized that only a fraction of the needed supplies made it into the Strip and that 9 out of 10 people cannot eat every day, adding that conditions in the Strip made deliveries “almost impossible.” An Israeli army spokesman, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Hecht, told the BBC that “any death and pain for a civilian is painful, but we have no alternative”; “We are doing everything we can to bring as much as possible to the Gaza Strip,” he said, according to the British broadcaster.
