Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer said he was against the start of negotiations for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union “under current conditions”. Responding to Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) MPs Petra Steger, Christian Hafenecker and Axel Kassegger during the European Affairs Committee of the Austrian Parliament, Nehammer explained that Austria would not accept accession negotiations with Ukraine under current conditions, reports Express .
Furthermore, according to the Austrian Chancellor, there should be no preferential treatment for Ukraine, especially in comparison with Bosnia-Herzegovina, currently in negotiations for EU membership. Nehammer also stressed that there was no consultation by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, with the government leaders of EU member countries about possible accession negotiations for Kiev.
