“As long as we can.” Biden met with Zelensky

Joe Biden and Volodymyr Zelensky met in Washington. The US will help Ukraine “as long as we can,” the US president said.

On Tuesday, the Ukrainian president visited the White House for the third time. On his next visit to the US, Zelensky will seek continued American help in the fight against Russia by having Washington confirm further financial and military packages.

Biden-Zelensky meeting

In an official statement, the White House noted that the meeting of the presidents is intended to “underscore the United States’ unwavering commitment to supporting the Ukrainian people in their defense against Russia’s brutal invasion.”

During the meeting, the President of the United States announced another $200 million in financial assistance to Kiev. – Congress should provide Ukraine with extra money before it goes on holiday, before it gives Putin the biggest Christmas gift it can give him – Joe Biden was quoted by CNN.

“As Long as We Can”

The US president announced that aid will be provided to Ukraine “as long as we can”.

– The fate of Ukrainian freedom is at stake today, but if we don’t stop Putin, freedom everywhere will be at risk, Biden said. – Ukraine will emerge from this war proud, free and strongly rooted in the West – unless we withdraw – the US president added.

The Democrat recalled that the financial resources previously allocated to help Ukraine are now running out, and it is therefore necessary for Congress to approve another package.

Biden again expressed his dissatisfaction with Republican policies. – We need to be aware of how it is perceived in the world. How is this perceived by Russia, he said. – The presenter of a Kremlin TV program recently said, and I quote: “Well done, Republicans” (…) If you are celebrated by Russian propaganda, it may be time to reconsider your approach – he said.

Biden criticized Republicans for “holding Ukraine’s financing hostage.” He also added that talks are still ongoing to reach a compromise.

Financing from the US uncertain

Let’s not forget that President Joe Biden’s administration has asked Congress to allocate $111 billion in aid to Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan and to increase the security of the southern US border, which is under pressure from African and Asian migrants . The largest part of the package would be spent on aid to Ukraine – more than PLN 60 billion.

What’s the next step for the project?

The bill did not receive enough majority in the Senate to move forward. All Republicans voted against because the package did not include the issue of protecting the US border from crowds of foreigners. The procedure has been going on for many months and according to the Republican party there has been no response from Washington.

The project was ultimately not defeated, because the majority of Republicans in the Senate are in favor of continuing to help Ukraine, but at the same time want to put pressure on Democrats to include appropriate provisions in the project to secure their own borders. This includes: for limiting asylum policies and resuming construction of a fence on the border with Mexico, from which masses of Africans, Asians, but also, to a lesser extent, Chinese and Russians, flow into the United States.

The Biden administration and Congress are trying to reach an agreement. According to unofficial information, the US presidential administration is willing to make concessions in this area.
