ISW warns: Russia is preparing for a new war

Russia is preparing for a new war, experts from the American Institute for the Study of War warn.

Russia’s large-scale aggression against Ukraine has been going on since February 24, 2022. Currently, the conflict has degenerated into a situation of trench warfare, with neither side achieving a breakthrough. Both sides are moving slowly. At the same time, there are reports confirming that the Ukrainian counter-offensive in the spring did not go according to plan.

Meanwhile, Russia is rebuilding and slowly regaining its lead on the battlefield. – Two months ago we had 400,000 Russians, now we have concentrated 450,000 – said Vladislav Selezniov, former spokesman of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

However, ISW analysts report that Russia is already thinking about what will happen after the war in Ukraine. As the Americans claim, the Kremlin is preparing for a new war.

“The long-term restructuring and expansion of the Russian military is aimed at preparing Russia for a future conventional war,” we read. The target of the attack is NATO and the countries that cooperate with it. The activities must be carried out “on a large scale,” involving “precious marine resources in areas outside Ukraine and Eastern Europe.” This was mentioned by Putin, who pointed out the strategic importance of the Arctic for Russia.

Financing Ukraine

Ukraine’s continued defense depends on funding from the United States and the European Union. In both cases, question marks have recently appeared. However, after US President Joe Biden proposed a compromise on US border policy, the prospects for a bipartisan deal on payments to Ukraine have improved.

“Republicans met behind closed doors to evaluate the oral proposal, which was presented after Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas met with senators for nearly two hours Tuesday evening,” Bloomberg reported.

According to Republican Senator Tom Tillis, the proposal would give Biden more powers to deport undocumented migrants once a certain number of them cross the US border. Conservative Republicans, however, decided this wasn’t enough.
