Ian Cramer, 42, son of a U.S. Congressional senator, was arrested on charges of car theft, escape and causing the death of a sheriff’s deputy.
Tragic escape in SUV
The man suffers from schizophrenia; He went to the hospital in North Dakota with his mother for a visit regarding his psychiatric problems. When he got out of the SUV, he impromptuly took the wheel and took off. A tragic escape. The woman immediately raised the alarm. Cramer, who was being pursued by police, possibly under the influence of amphetamines, crashed into a car on the side of the road at 100 mph, killing Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputy Paul Martin, 53. The North Dakota Highway Patrol publicly mourned the death of Paul Martin, an 18-year veteran of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office who left behind his wife, three children and grandchildren.
Doses of cocaine, amphetamines, marijuana, a lighter and rolled dollar bills were found in Ian Cramer’s backpack. The judge set bail at half a million and ordered a psychiatric evaluation. The man remains in prison. He faces twenty years if convicted.

Ian is the son of Kevin Cramer, 62, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2019, is a conservative representative from North Dakota, a supporter of free gun ownership and an opponent of same-sex marriage. The senator has made national headlines in the past for speaking out against Native American courts being allowed to try non-Native people accused of sexually assaulting tribal members.
