The national government, headed by President Iván Duque, together with Justice Minister Wilson Ruiz Orejuela, will meet this Wednesday at 510 modular prison quota at the Penitentiary Establishment of Medium Security Prison of Barranquilla, better known as the forest prison.
By making these spaces available, they aim to reduce overcrowding in temporary detention centers (URI and police stations), which the authorities say is 200%, and also reduce overcrowding in city prisons. National Penitentiary and Prison Institute (Inpec), stands at 59.1%.
Entity numbers show that there is capacity in the department to 1,094 prisonersbut currently that population is 1,741, that is, there is an overcrowding of 647 inmates.
The event, scheduled for today at 2 p.m., will also include the director of Uspec, Andrés Díaz Hernández and the director of Inpec, Brigadier General Tito Yesid Castellanos, as well as local authorities such as the governor of Atlántico, Elsa Noguera, and the mayor of Barranquilla, Jaime Pumarejo.
