A 13-year-old boy on the autism spectrum died tragically after taking a lighter and setting fire to the Christmas tree at his family’s home. 30-year-old mother Brenda Contreras Juarez was not at home when the tragedy that led to the death of her son Brandon occurred on Tuesday, December 12, in North Carolina, United States.
A caregiver was looking after a teenager and a five-year-old girl when the disaster occurred at 18.30. Family members said the boy somehow got his hands on a lighter and set the family Christmas tree on fire, and the fire quickly spread throughout the house. According to the Daily Mail, the babysitter and the little girl managed to escape the disaster, but Brandon was trapped in the flames and died in the fire despite the babysitter’s efforts to save him.
His caregiver suffered minor injuries trying to save Brandon’s life and is currently recovering in hospital. The family lost everything in the fire, but the most devastating loss was that of Brandon, the oldest of his brothers. The grieving mother said, “The days were spent in torture. I miss him very much and I am dying of sadness.” “We lost all the material things. But the hardest thing is that we cannot compensate for the thing that hurt us the most, the absence of the child,” added Brenda’s aunt, Noelia Juarez.
The house on Fanning Pointe Lane, where the woman lived alone with her three children, was completely unusable in the fire. Family members set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral expenses, which has raised $5,255 so far.
