Rabbi: The Israeli army cannot hurt religious feelings

Israel’s Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef urged Israeli soldiers not to hurt the religious feelings of followers of other faiths.

This applies to entering mosques as well as Palestinian homes, he emphasized in a letter to military Chief Rabbi Eyal Karim, Israeli media reported.

The Chief Rabbi noted that the Israeli nation “is a virtuous nation and does not behave like the murderers who have mercilessly slaughtered, plundered, corrupted and desecrated everything that is sacred and dear to us.” Therefore, one should “avoid actions that are not useful in the struggle and that harm the nation of Israel and its reputation in the world.”

Rabbi Yosef referred to a series of incidents in which soldiers were filmed desecrating Palestinian property in Gaza and the West Bank, destroying shops in Gaza and speaking through a loudspeaker at a mosque in the West Bank. According to media reports on December 15, videos recently circulated on social media showing soldiers singing songs for the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah over the mosque’s loudspeaker system, which is usually used by the muezzin to call Muslims to prayer.

Israeli soldiers killed two women in a Catholic parish

Israeli army soldiers entered the Catholic parish of the Holy Family in the Gaza Strip and shot at people leaving the church. Two women, a mother and a daughter, died. An Israeli Army (IDF) sniper opened fire on worshipers in the Catholic parish of the Holy Family in Gaza City on Saturday. According to the Vatican News website, reports of the attack were confirmed by the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, Cardinal. Pierbattista Pizzaballa.

An elderly woman and her daughter, who ran outside to help her mother, died on the spot. Seven other worshipers were injured while trying to help people in the church. One person is in very serious condition.

The Israeli army justified the attack with the alleged presence of rocket launchers in the parish. The operation was not interrupted despite the intervention of the Patriarchate. “An Israeli sniper positioned himself near the parish and shot at civilians hiding in the building,” we read.
