The doctrinal declaration “Fiducia supplicans” of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, approved by the Pope, will make it possible to bless homosexual couples.
These are couples formed by people of the same sex, but outside any ritual or imitation of marriage. The doctrine of marriage does not change, blessing does not mean acceptance of the relationship – indicates Vatican News.
When confronted with the request of two people to be blessed, even if their status as a couple is “irregular”, the ordained minister will be able to agree, but without the gesture containing elements even remotely similar to the wedding ceremony.
Declaration “Fiducia supplicans”
This is what the statement “Fiducia supplicans” on the pastoral importance of the Beatitudes, published by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and approved by the Pope, says. “A document that delves deeper into the subject of blessings, distinguishing between ritual and liturgical blessings, and spontaneous blessings more akin to gestures of popular piety: it is in this second category that the possibility of welcoming also those who do not according to the rules live up to the standards of Christian moral doctrine, but humbly ask to be blessed,” reports Vatican News.
Since August 23, the former Holy Office has not published a declaration (the last was in 2000, “Dominus Iesus”), a document of high doctrinal value.
The document “Fiducia supplicans” begins with an introduction by the Prefect, Cardinal. Victor Fernandez, who explains that the declaration deepens “the pastoral significance of the Beatitudes,” allowing “their classical understanding to be broadened and enriched” through theological reflection “based on the pastoral vision of Pope Francis.”
A reflection that “implies a real development in relation to what has been said so far about the Beatitudes”, including the possibility of “blessing couples in irregular situations and couples of the same sex, without officially approving them status or altering in any way the Church’s age-old teaching on marriage.”
