Former child bride who killed her husband faces execution

Samira Sabzianfard was supposed to be hanged in Tehran, Iran, last Wednesday, but the execution was postponed until tomorrow, December 20. The woman entered the high-security prison in Karachak ten years ago for killing her husband, to whom she was married when she was a child: Sabzianfard was forced to marry at the age of 15 (the legal marriage age for girls). He is 13 years old (but they can get married earlier with the permission of his father or grandfather) and kills his wife four years later in 2013. While the execution of the 32-year-old woman, who was sentenced to death, was supposed to be carried out on December 13, Iranian authorities decided to postpone the execution for a week after international pressure.

Last week, before her scheduled execution, the woman was able to meet her two children for the first time since her incarceration. According to the Islamic Republic’s criminal code, those accused of murder are sentenced to death, regardless of the circumstances in which the crime occurred. The victim’s family may choose to accept the death penalty or seek financial compensation. The parents of the 32-year-old woman’s murdered husband called for the death penalty to be carried out.

X Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, director of the Norway-based ‘Iran Human Rights’ NGO, said, “Only a strong international response at this point can save his life,” and appealed to “everyone who has diplomatic relations with Iran.” “The Islamic Republic will demand that the execution of Samira’s death sentence be stopped before it is too late.”

Iran holds the world record for executing women. In the last year, which was marked by the protests that started after the murder of Mahsa Amini, 702 people were executed by hanging; This number was almost 100 more than the previous year. In November 79.
