Iran, Samira Sabzian hanged: the tragic end of the child bride

Samira Sabzian, the former child bride who was in prison in Iran for years and sentenced to death for killing her husband, was hanged this morning in Iran. The sad news was given by the NGO Iran Human Rights. «A victim for years of gender apartheid, early marriage and domestic violence, Samira was today a victim of the murderous machine of an incompetent and corrupt regime, a regime that sustained itself exclusively by killing and instilling fear. Ali Khamenei and other leaders of the Islamic Republic must be held accountable for this crime. Like other victims of the regime’s “death machine,” Samira was among the most vulnerable members of a voiceless society. A week-long campaign was not enough to save him. We must fight every day to save thousands of other people who are at risk of becoming victims of the murder machine to preserve the regime’s survival,” the NGO’s director, Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam, wrote in X.

“Samira was a victim of the practice of early marriage and I saw how much she suffered in prison due to the fact that she was denied access to her children”, added Mozhgan Keshavarz, the Iranian activist, again on the social network. his cellmate and who spent almost three years behind bars, mainly in the infamous Evin prison in Tehran province. The Islamic Republic has the highest number of executions per capita in the world.

According to Iranian human rights sources, Samira was executed in Qeezel Hesar prison in Karaj. Samira’s execution was initially scheduled for Wednesday, December 13, 2013, but was postponed for a week also following the reaction from civil society. Samira Sabzian married very young, at 15, and was a child wife. The woman had also been a victim of domestic violence before committing the alleged homicide. According to the NGO, Samira had two children and was imprisoned for around 10 years, always deprived of the possibility of visiting her children. “For the first time in years, he met with his children for a last visit before the death penalty,” reads the NGO’s website. So far this year, 18 women have been executed in Iran, in accordance with Iran Human Rights.
