The WHO classifies the Pirola variant as “of concern”.

The World Health Organization (WHO) on Tuesday classified the coronavirus JN.1 strain as a “variant of concern” but clarified that it does not pose a major threat to public health.

“Based on the available evidence, JN.1 is currently assessed as low,” the WHO said in a document.

JN.1 was previously classified as a variant of interest as part of the BA.2.86 parent line.

This was reported by the United Nations. Current vaccines continue to protect against severe illness and death from JN.1 and other circulating variants of the Covid-19 virus.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said the JN.1 subvariant will account for about 15% and 29% of the country’s cases, respectively, as of Dec. 8, according to the agency’s latest projections.

He added that there is now no evidence that JN.1 poses an increased public health risk compared to other variants, and that an updated vaccine could protect Americans.

WHO is continuously monitoring the evidence and will update the JN.1 risk assessment as necessary.

According to the CDC, JN.1 was first discovered in the United States in September.
