Israel-Hamas and Gaza say no to temporary truce: what are they asking for

Hamas, Islamic Jihad and other Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip will not conduct any negotiations with Israel on the release of the hostages until a full ceasefire is reached. “There is a national decision that there will be no negotiations or prisoner exchanges until there is a complete end to Israeli aggression”, reads a note released on behalf of the Palestinian forces and published on the Hamas Telegram channel.

The statement confirms the indiscretion that came last night from the Wall Street Journal, which cited Egyptian officials. Hamas then rejected the Israeli offer of a week-long break in fighting in exchange for the release of around forty hostages held captive in the Gaza Strip. Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh traveled to Cairo to meet with the head of Egyptian Intelligence.

From the United States, Secretary General Antony Blinken said ending the war between Israel and Hamas “as quickly as possible” is a top priority for the Biden administration next year. The desire expressed by Washington is for a new phase of the conflict “with less intensity” and with “targeted operations”. The US wants a reduction in civilian casualties and President Joe Biden called the latest death toll provided by Gaza authorities “tragic”. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in turn, reiterated that Israel will continue the war “until victory” and anyone who thinks otherwise “is disconnected from reality”. “Every member of Hamas is destined to die,” the threat to Palestinian terrorists.
