China, tunnels and wells raise the alarm. Return to nuclear energy? The tests

The New York Times broke a bombshell story revealing that Beijing would carry out major work at the Lop Nur facility in Xinjiang in light of the possible resumption of nuclear testing. Satellite images would have provided undeniable details. The area in question, used by China to carry out nuclear tests between 1964 and 1996, appears to be active. In September it was CNN that looked into the issue and the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded harshly: “Since the announcement of the suspension of nuclear tests in 1996, China has respected its promise and committed itself internationally to defending its prohibition”.

Based on data from a US State Department report, in 2020 it was the Wall Street Journal that claimed that China could carry out nuclear tests secretly and therefore not fulfill its promises. But the issue continues to attract the press and worry the entire world. As predicted, the New York Times recently raised the alarm by showing satellite evidence of suspicious work carried out at the Chinese site discovered by Renny Babiarz, a former intelligence analyst. Traces of road construction, horizontal tunnels and vertical shafts, dozens of new or renovated buildings: everything suggests new plans.

“The Russians and the Americans have continued activities at their sites, but nothing like this,” assured Siegfried S. Hecker, former director of the Los Alamos weapons laboratory. “All the evidence points in the direction of what appears to be preparations for the resumption of nuclear tests. by China,” said Tong Zhao, an expert at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.
