A figure tries to block Vladimir Putin’s new term as leader of Russia. Regional councilor Yekaterina Duntsova submitted documents to the Russian Central Election Commission to be able to run in the upcoming presidential elections, scheduled for March 17. Duntsova is a pacifist who calls for an end to the conflict in Ukraine and, in statements to journalists, she said she wants a Russia that is “humane, peaceful, friendly and ready to cooperate with everyone in accordance with the principle of respect”. To be able to run, Duntsova, who is a former journalist, needs 300,000 signatures from at least 40 Russian regions.
“We did everything we had to do – the woman explained -. We took this step and I think it should inspire the people who support us. and I hope people will actively participate.” In a previous interview with the Associated Press, Duntsova said she feared possible Kremlin attacks on opposition activists and protesters, but insisted on the need to “present an alternative” to current President Putin and his policies. If elected, she promised to release “Russian political prisoners,” without naming names. But she has previously said she was also willing to free anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny. Her name is unlikely to worry the “Tsar.”
