The former deputy, who sent messages about sexual abuse to children, was captured by undercover police officers. Paul Williams, a former Rex Council member, denied any wrongdoing but was found guilty after trial.

The 56-year-old was found guilty at Wrexham Magistrates’ Court and will be sentenced next month. North Wales Live reports he has been accused of sending abusive, obscene, indecent or threatening messages on a public network. In fact, he sent a series of messages relating to child sexual abuse in Wrexham between June 1 and August 26 last year.

The court heard how Williams, of Bernard Road, Wrexham, used two pornographic websites to communicate sexual fantasies about children to other users. However, the two people he spoke to were undercover police officers working for the National Crime Agency.

Williams has been a member of Plaid for more than 15 years, but the party said he had not been a member for nearly a year after leaving office. As well as serving on Wrexham Council, he has been a member of Caia Park Community Council since 2015 and is a former president of the Smithfield Residents’ Association.

The defendant said he was embarrassed and admitted he knew his actions were “disgusting and obscene.” He acted for the sexual pleasure of himself and others.

Williams was released on unconditional bail pending a sentencing hearing at the same court on Wednesday, January 17. For the latest court reports, subscribe to our crime newsletter here
