Iranian agents confiscated the Sakharov award given to Mahsa Amini at the airport

Iranian security forces confiscated the plaque of the 2023 EU Sakharov Prize, which was recently awarded to Mahsa Amini, a woman who died in police custody after protesting against the mandatory headscarf. The news was condemned by Kurdish human rights defenders. It was reported that Amini’s family’s lawyer, Mohammad Saleh-Nikbakht, was captured and interrogated at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport last night after arriving from France, where he received the award on behalf of his family. The award, the lawyer’s mobile phone and passport were also confiscated by security forces at the airport.

The Sakharov Prize is the highest award given by the European Union to those who work towards human rights. It is awarded to individuals, groups and organizations that make outstanding contributions to the protection of freedom of thought. The 2023 award was given to Mahsa Amini and her “Women, Life, Freedom” movement, which “strongly evokes the ongoing struggle for human rights and women’s freedom in Iran.” The award is named after Russian physicist Andrej Dmitrievič Sakharov, winner of the 1975 Nobel Peace Prize.
