Police have warned the driver who outfitted his car with festive lighting that it is illegal. Gwent Police said there were so many lights covering the car windows it was “like wearing sunglasses at night”.

Police warned that it is illegal to turn on a red light except at the back of a car. Half of the necessary light came in through the car windows, so many fairy lights were hanging over them.

Publishing a photo of the X-shaped car, Gwent Police said: “This vehicle let less than half the required light in through the front windows. “It’s like wearing sunglasses at night.”

“Also covered in fairy lights. “Displaying red front or rear lights that are not red is illegal and confuses other road users.”

Traffic rules state that the driver’s windshield must be free from obstacles that obstruct vision. The same rules apply to satellite navigation systems, window mounts and windscreen stickers.

By law, at least two rear-view mirrors are mandatory, one of which is the driver’s side mirror. But there is no law about rear visibility.
