The Pope asks not to confuse Christmas with consumerism

On the occasion of Christmas this Sunday, Pope Francis asked “not to confuse the holiday with consumerism” and to reflect on the population groups suffering from war, such as Palestine, Israel and Ukraine, during the Angelus prayer in St. Peter’s Square.

“I wish you a good Sunday and a Christmas Eve in prayer, in the warmth of affection and sobriety, and if you allow me, a recommendation: do not confuse celebration with consumerism. As a Christian you can celebrate in simplicity and share with others without waste, who do not have what they need or do not have company,” the Pope said as he leaned out of the window of the Papal Palace.

Francis also asked that this Christmas we remember “our brothers who suffer war” and “think of Palestine, Israel and Ukraine and those who suffer misery, hunger and slavery.”

“The God who took on a human heart will instill humanity in the hearts of men,” Francis wished.

The Pope, who has just recovered from bronchitis, will preside over all Christmas liturgical events, starting with today’s celebration of Midnight Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The Mass will begin at 7:30 PM Italian time (6:30 PM GMT), as has been customary in recent years, instead of waiting until midnight so the faithful can eat with their families later.

Due to his mobility issues, the Pope will preside over the ceremony on one side of the altar and read the homily.

On Christmas morning, as on the day of his election, Jorge Bergoglio will reappear at noon (11 a.m. GMT) on the central balcony of the Vatican Basilica’s loggia to read the Christmas message, focused as anyone else. years., in the evils and wars of the world, and grant the blessing “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city of Rome and to the whole world).

On the 31st, First Vespers will be celebrated in St. Peter’s Basilica at 5:00 PM (4:00 PM GMT), and on January 1, the Mass of the Solemnity of Mary Most Holy Mother of God will be celebrated, coinciding with the World Day of Peace.

Christmas celebrations conclude on January 6 with the Epiphany Mass at 10am (9am GMT) in San Pedro.
