Dozens of victims of Israeli airstrike on a refugee camp in the Gaza Strip

At least seventy people were killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Maghazi refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip’s Ministry of Health reported that at least 70 people were killed as a result of the Israeli attack on the refugee camp on December 24. According to the US news agency Reuters, the head of the Ministry of Health, Ashraf al-Qidra, said there was a “massacre”, and Hamas indicated that we were dealing with a “new war crime”.

Attack on a refugee camp

The raid on the Maghazi refugee camp in central Gaza took place on Christmas Eve. Many women and children, who make up a large part of the local community, were killed.

The IDF command announced that it would review the report on the attack on Maghazi and make every effort to minimize civilian casualties in the future.

Meanwhile, the Palestinian Red Crescent humanitarian organization has warned that IDF aircraft are largely bombing roads in central Gaza, hindering the passage of ambulances and other emergency vehicles.

Reuters also reported that eight Palestinians were killed in an airstrike in another urban center – Khan Yunus in the southern Gaza Strip. This is the second time Israel has attacked a refugee camp.

Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip

The airstrikes on the Gaza Strip began shortly after the al-Qassam Brigade, the armed wing of Hamas, attacked Israeli territory on October 7. On October 27, the Israeli land operation began in the northern part of the Gaza Strip. Tel Aviv’s stated goal is to eliminate Hamas there to permanently eliminate the threat from this direction. The operation was preceded by a call for Palestinians to evacuate south. It turned out that civilians are by far the largest group of victims of Israeli attacks, and that the Gaza Strip is being systematically destroyed.

According to Middle East analysts, the likely reasons why Hamas attacked in October include: an attempt to normalize relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, Hamas’ rivalry with other Palestinian Authority centers for leadership among the Palestinians, and a permanent reason, namely opposition. to Israeli actions against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

Hamas is a radical Islamic organization whose main goal is the liberation of Palestine from Israeli occupation.
