Riots in Belgrade. Protesters stormed the city hall

Tensions escalated in Belgrade on Sunday. A crowd of demonstrators tried to enter City Hall. There are injured police officers and dozens of people arrested.

In Belgrade, the capital of Serbia, thirty police officers were injured when demonstrators stormed the local town hall. Numerous arrests and detentions also took place during the demonstration. Opposition supporters are demanding the annulment of the results of the parliamentary and local elections, which they say were falsified.

During Sunday’s protest, the crowd tried to break through to City Hall. The police used tear gas, among other things. 30 officers were injured. It is not known whether there are any injuries among the demonstrators.

Rigged elections in Serbia?

Supporters of the Serbian opposition have been protesting in Belgrade for several days. Those present claim that the December 17 parliamentary and local elections were fraudulent and therefore demand the results be annulled.

Observers from the European Union and the Council of Europe also say the vote was unfair and manipulated.

The Serbia Against Violence Coalition, part of the Serbian opposition, called on international institutions not to recognize the results and to launch an international investigation into the case.

Official election results announced after the vote showed that the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won 128 seats in the 250-seat National Assembly, with 65 seats going to the Serbia Against Violence formation.
