The new Russian howitzers will be delivered to units of the Northern Military District of the Russian Federation, which borders Finland.
In an interview with the RIA Novosti agency, Sergey Chemezov, head of the Rostec arms concern, announced that new 2S35 self-propelled howitzers will be delivered to the units of the Northern Military District of the Russian Federation, which borders Finland (they will eventually replaced the 2S19 howitzers).
The main armament of the new self-propelled howitzer is the 152.4 mm 2A88 gun. The range of the missiles it fires is up to 70 km. The gun howitzer can carry 60 to 70 projectiles and fire more than 10 projectiles per minute, TASS news agency reported.
The first batch of new howitzers will reach Russian military units before the end of 2023. – I think they will soon appear in the Northern Military District, because there howitzers of this class are needed to provide an advantage over Western artillery sets in terms of firing range – he said Sergei Chemezov.
Russia warned it would expand its forces on its western border after Finland joined NATO on March 4, 2023.
Finland in NATO
In May 2022, Finland and Sweden accelerated their application to join the North Atlantic Alliance, without implementing the Membership Action Plan. At the end of June, the leaders of the NATO countries officially invited both countries to join the Pact. Then the process of ratification of the relevant protocol by the parliaments of NATO member states began. All thirty countries have ratified the protocol on Finland’s accession to NATO. The last to do this were Hungary and Türkiye. Sweden is still waiting for Turkey’s consent.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin argued that Russia has “no problems” with Finland and Sweden, and that the entry of both countries into the North Atlantic Alliance does not pose a direct threat to the Kremlin. At the same time, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced that Russia will strengthen its military capabilities in the western and northwestern regions in response to Finland’s accession to NATO.
