German general: NATO must be prepared for a Russian attack

NATO must be prepared for the Russian attack, says German NATO General Jürgen-Joachim von Sandrart.

Juergen-Joachim von Sandrart is the commander of NATO’s Northeast Multinational Corps at headquarters in Szczecin.

In an interview with the Handelsblatt newspaper, the general spoke about a possible attack by Russia. According to him, it is unlikely that Putin will take such a step, but “we must prepare for it.”

– NATO has sufficient resources to guarantee the security of its northern flank – argues the military officer. In the event of an attack, the corps in Szczecin has troops from the entire region, but also from Germany and Denmark.

However, the general emphasizes that the NATO border with Russia and Belarus is 1,000 kilometers away. – The task is enormous – he says. According to him, the Alliance’s forces must be modernized as quickly as possible because Russia “will rearm its army at the latest after the war in Ukraine.” He says this will take two to 10 years.

Russia and Western sanctions

In response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the West has introduced a number of economic sanctions against Moscow. In December, the European Union accepted the twelfth package of sanctions. Contrary to what many war commentators believe, the sanctions have not destroyed the Russian economy, but they have had a negative impact on state finances.

The head of Russia’s central bank, Elvira Nabiullina, said last week that the most painful consequence of Western sanctions on Russia is the restriction of international payments. Another problem is the freezing of private investors’ assets.

Elvira Nabiullina admitted that it cannot be said that the Russian Federation “managed to respond to all challenges” and solve all problems resulting from sanctions, but the Russian looked with optimism at the future development of the financial sector.
