Four shots were fired in just three seconds. A video implicates a Los Angeles police officer in the death of 27-year-old Niani Finlayson, who was killed last Dec. 4 at her home in Lancaster after calling 911 to report a domestic violence incident.
The sheriff’s department released body camera video of the officer who opened fire. Calls to the emergency number have also become common. During the phone call, the young woman can be heard shouting, “He doesn’t want to leave my house… He won’t leave me alone… I need the police urgently.” She is heard screaming and repeatedly telling a man to leave her alone. The family’s lawyer said the man was her ex-boyfriend.
The video shows officers arriving at Finlayson’s apartment, where screams can be heard. Officers try to force entry, then the blue door opens: Finlayson is next to his 9-year-old daughter and appears to be holding a kitchen knife and saying, “I’m going to stab her.” The first female police officer to enter the house is. His colleague then arrives and shoots Finlayson four times. The young woman dies instantly.
The murder of the 27-year-old young man sparked many protests. Civil rights activists attacked police and were found guilty of not trying to defuse tensions and immediately using force. Last week, Finlayson’s relatives filed a lawsuit against police and Los Angeles County. The officer who opened fire, Ty Shelton, has been fired while the investigation continues. This is not the first time the police have been involved in such an incident.
