A senior Hamas official, the deputy head of the so-called Politburo of the Palestinian organization’s political wing, Saleh al-Arouri, is among the victims of the Israeli attack in the southern suburbs of Beirut, Lebanon. The news was confirmed by Hezbollah to L’Orient-Le Jour. Al-Arouri, in addition to being number two in the group’s political position, is the founder of the Palestinian armed wing, the Ezzedin al-Qassam Brigades. The man was killed in a drone attack attributed to Israel that hit the southern outskirts of the Lebanese capital, a stronghold of Lebanese militiamen allied with Hamas. Two commanders of the al-Qassam Brigades were also killed, without the two being identified yet.
Al-Arouri had also been head of the organization in the West Bank and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu threatened to kill him even before the war between Hamas and Israel began on October 7. There are currently no official comments from Israel.
