Russian oligarchs enriched themselves with more than $50 billion

Despite Western sanctions caused by aggression against Ukraine, Russian oligarchs are continuously increasing their wealth.

The wealth of Russia’s richest citizens increased by more than $50 billion last year (2023). The founder of Lukoil (the second largest Russian oil company), Vagit Alekperov, earned the most.

The Bloomberg Billionaires Index, cited by Russian news website Kommersant, shows that the following Russian oligarchs have become the richest:

Vagit Alekperov, founder of Lukoil, +$9.29 billion (total $24.7 billion);
Andrei Melnichenko, co-founder of Eurochem and SUEK, + USD 5.67 billion (total USD 17.42 billion);
NLMK founder Vladimir Lisin, + USD 4.08 billion (total USD 23.9 billion);
former deputy head of Lukoil Leonid Fedun + USD 3.91 billion (total USD 9.78 billion);
Leonid Mikhelson, CEO of NOVATEK, +$2.83 billion ($27.5 billion in total).

The biggest losses were suffered by Acron’s main shareholder, Wiaczesław Kantor, whose fortune fell by $149 million to $6.21 billion.

Oligarch Vladimir Potanin, owner of Nornickel, remains the richest Russianand his net worth increased by $2.5 billion to $31.1 billion in 2023.

The richest person in the world in 2023 was Elon Musk, founder of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X (formerly Twitter).

Russia took over the presidency of the BRICS. Putin sets out Moscow’s objectives

On January 1, Russia took over the presidency of the BRICS. The association currently consists of 10 countries. Vladimir Putin spoke on this occasion. Putin announced that the countries co-creating the organization are guided by the following principles: sovereign equality, respect for the choice of one’s own development path, taking into account mutual interests, openness, consensus, the desire to form a multipolar world order and a fair model of the global financial and trading system, as well as the search for collective solutions to the most pressing problems of our time.
