Graves in a Newport cemetery were almost completely submerged by floodwaters on Wednesday after Storm Hank caused widespread disruption in Wales. Storm Hank brought winds of up to 80mph to coastal areas of Wales, and the Met Office has issued an amber wind warning for much of south Wales.
The alert was in effect throughout Tuesday, along with a yellow warning for rain. In one area, Tenby, there was a “significant” risk to life, according to Natural Resources Wales. On Wednesday 3 January the weather appeared to have stabilized but there was still one severe flood warning, eight flood warnings and 32 flood warnings in force.
St. Wallace Cemetery in Newport was one of the areas affected by the flooding, with much of the cemetery underwater on Wednesday morning. Photos of the area show graves partially submerged by floodwaters and huge puddles throughout the cemetery. Dozens of graves were damaged by the flood. It is not known whether they were affected by the weather. You can get more story updates straight to your inbox by subscribing to our newsletters here.

A resident stated that this is not the first time that the cemetery has been flooded during heavy rain and that “the same thing happens every year”. Newport City Council is believed to be aware of the incident. They have been contacted for comment.
