The US Department of Justice published this Wednesday a first set of court documents related to the deceased financier Jeffrey Epsteinaccused of trafficking and sexual abuse of minorsand those hitherto classified.
The documents are part of a defamation lawsuit filed in 2015 by Virginia Giuffre, one of the leading whistleblowers of Epstein, against his ex-lover and partner, the British heiress Ghislaine Maxwell, and they have monopolized media attention due to the expectation that it will involve prominent figures associated with the billionaire.
However, it is expected that many of the names will already be known as they will be identified during the trial by 2021 Maxwel – sentenced to 20 years in prison for helping the financier to sexually abuse minors – or for giving interviews or being the subject of complaints.
Federal District Court Judge Loretta Preska for the Southern District of New York, had ordered that from January 1, the previously sealed documents containing the identities of about 150 people would be made public.
Being mentioned in the documents does not imply any kind of guilt, as there is everything from emails to statements from victims or witnesses. The identities of those who were minors or did not make public statements remain hidden.
The deadline was set to give anyone who opposed the publication of their name time to object. At least two people have objected and have until January 22 to explain their reasons.
The first set of documents, published this Wednesday, totals about 1,000 pages.
It is understood that the final list will include the name of Prince Andrew, who has sued Giuffre for sexual abuse and with whom she has reached an out-of-court settlement, as well as former President Bill Clinton (1993-2001), identified by ABC News. as “John Doe 36,” whom Giuffre tried unsuccessfully to call to testify.
Clinton, who has no pending charges, appears on the passenger lists of Epstein’s flights to several countries, but his possible presence on any of the financier’s islands is not clear, something Giuffre claims but denies.
Epstein committed suicide in a federal prison in 2019 N.Y, where he was awaiting trial for allegedly creating a sex trafficking network involving minors in his mansions in the Big Apple and Florida. The youngest girls were 14 years old, according to the Public Prosecution Service.
