Kadyrov proposes a deal. The release of prisoners of war due to the lifting of sanctions against his family

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov called for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the West on his family.

The leader of the Republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has offered to release 20 Ukrainian prisoners of war if Western sanctions against his relatives are lifted.

– My mother, wife, daughters and cousins are not guilty. They have never participated in political games. They didn’t say a word. I fought, I will fight – Kadyrov’s words are quoted by the Russian state agency TASS.

– Hit me with whatever you want, but leave my family, my mother. If the lives of these people are important to them, let them trade their soldiers for the lifting of sanctions, he urged.

According to media reports, Ramzan Kadyrov, who supports Vladimir Putin’s war activities, allegedly handed over a list of prisoners of war to Scott Ritter, a former US intelligence officer accused of supporting Russia. Ritter promoted the Kremlin’s narrative that “the West controls Ukraine and uses it for its own purposes.” He declared that “journalism in the US is dead” and does not believe what the Western media say about the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Moreover, the former military expert argued that “Russia does not want war and is only responding to American provocations.”

The Chechen side also showed a video asking men dressed in uniforms of the Ukrainian armed forces – probably Ukrainian prisoners of war – to lift the “absurd, ineffective” sanctions imposed on Kadyrov’s young relatives, his horses and the planes he uses .

Is Russia trying to curry favor with Muslims?

The Islamic world’s position on Russia’s war in Ukraine is very ambiguous, and many Muslims de facto support Russia. For this purpose, the occupation authorities of Crimea have agreed to build a new grand mosque in Simferopol, AsiaNews reports.

Vladimir Rozanskiy notes that Russia benefits from its participation in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OWI), which it has joined as an observer since 2005, which guarantees Moscow a favorable approach to Muslims as one of the allies in the confrontation with the West. . It recalls that during the KazanForum 2023 in May last year, Vladimir Putin assured that “Russia is open to the widest and most productive trade and humanitarian cooperation with Islamic countries, also emphasizing the role of Russian Muslims in expanding international contacts to jointly a multipolar and a more just world order”.

According to the Ukrainian President’s representative for Crimea, Tamila Tasheva, Islamists are not concerned about the Russian occupation of Crimea, despite the historical presence of indigenous Muslim peoples such as Sunni Tatars and other Turkic groups. Russian propaganda is supported by many Islamic political and religious leaders, especially Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov, who prays in Arabic with a gun in his hand.
