Former German president criticizes Scholz. It’s about weapons for Ukraine

Former President of the Federal Republic of Germany Joachim Gauck does not shy away from criticizing German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

– Faced with the devastating trench warfare and shameful air raids on the Ukrainian civilian population, I look at our actions with concern and wonder whether our support is enough, said former German President Joachim Gauck in an interview for the daily Bild am Sonntag.

Former German President: I don’t understand

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz still refuses to send Taurus cruise missiles, the German equivalent of Britain’s Storm Shadow, to Ukraine, fearing they will be used to attack the Crimean Bridge. Berlin is resisting pressure from Britain and Ukraine to deliver the missiles, despite assurances from London that they will only be fired at German-approved targets.

Taurus is one of the most modern missiles available to the Air Force. This weapon can find a target from a great height and distance and, for example, destroy bunker systems.

– I don’t know anything about military matters, but I have talked to people who have the necessary military knowledge. After these talks, I no longer understand why we hesitate to supply Ukraine with these weapons and other ammunition, Joachim Gauck said in an interview with the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. – We have to do this with everything we have at our disposal, without any ‘buts’. Because a Russian victory in the future would also threaten the security of other European countries, he added.

– Chancellor Scholz must ask himself from time to time whether he is missing his stated goal, which is to do everything in his power to prevent Russia from winning and imposing a “peace dictatorship.” It is irritating when the government’s hesitations not only reduce Ukraine’s chances of victory, but also increase the threat to the entire free world, the former President of the Federal Republic of Germany said.
