Middle East, Blinken warns Israel: “What do you risk”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned that the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza could “metastasize” and threaten security across the Middle East. «This is a moment of deep tension in the region. It is a conflict that could easily metastasize, causing even more insecurity and suffering,” Blinken said at a press conference in Qatar, during a regional trip aimed at de-escalating the conflict.

Blinken also defined as “irresponsible” the statements by far-right Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir calling for the transfer of the Gaza population out of the Strip. Palestinian civilians should be able to “return home” after the end of the conflict and not be forced to leave Gaza, Blinken said during the press conference in Doha. Involved in a mission to several countries in the Middle East, Blinken stressed that in meetings in Israel he will emphasize how imperative it is to avoid civilian casualties in Gaza. Finally, Blinken called the death of the Al Jazeera journalists “an unimaginable tragedy.”
