More than 15,000 people traveled through the Mayan Train Region during the first three weeks of opening operations, said General Oscar David Lozano Águila, project director.
In 18 days, 144 trips were made, carrying 15,579 passengers, Lozano said Monday during President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s morning press conference.
The majority of users were national tourists, totaling 8,368, the general said.
The routes with the highest demand are from San Francisco Campeche to Cancún al Mérida Teya, and back.
The first part of the Maia train opened on December 15, 2023, and the first trip with tourists took place the next day.
This first part has 14 different stations along the route. Currently only two races are offered per day: the first part at 7:00 am, the second part starts at 11:00 am.
López Obrador, in turn, opened the second route from Cancún, Quintana Roo to Palenque, Chiapas on December 31, 2023. The full works are expected to be commissioned in February this year.
