China calls on all parties to the conflict in Ukraine to “maintain calm and restraint.”
China’s representative to the UN said Russia and Ukraine should “intensify” their contacts to resume peace talks in the near future.
The Chinese diplomat said Beijing “always advocates peace and dialogue” and is “deeply concerned” about the situation in Ukraine. China calls on “all parties to this conflict to maintain calm and restraint.”
Beijing maintains strong trade ties with Russia despite Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. Since the beginning of the February 2022 invasion, Chinese state media have spread Russian propaganda. The leaders of the two countries, Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin, have also repeatedly publicly demonstrated their close ties.
Negotiations with Russia
Last month, a secret meeting of the Ukrainian authorities took place with allies of the G7 and representatives of the countries of the South. According to Bloomberg’s sources, Kiev wanted to gain support for its terms for peace talks with Russia.
The meeting most likely took place on December 16 in Saudi Arabia. According to the portal’s informants, the smaller size allowed for a freer and more open discussion about the so-called President Zelensky’s “peace formula” and plans to promote the peace process and the principles of possible cooperation with Russia in the future.
Italian Defense Minister Guido Crozetto said it was time “for diplomacy” in Ukraine’s war with Russia, adding that Kyiv’s strong support from the West was crucial to ensure serious negotiations.
Ukraine’s allies have sent a clear signal that they will continue to support Ukraine, and the EU and the US have expressed confidence that support packages will be approved.
Ukraine and its partners have planned a new meeting of the expanded group of advisers in Switzerland next week, on the eve of the World Economic Forum in Davos, and have invited more than 100 countries to participate. Previous meetings took place last year in Copenhagen, Jeddah and Malta.
